Proposal Development

Strengthen your proposal from concept to submission.

Developing a competitive proposal takes more than strong ideas; it requires planning, coordination, and a clear strategy. Northwestern provides support to help you shape, develop, and position proposals for success, especially for complex or interdisciplinary opportunities.

Support is delivered through a partnership of Research Development, school and unit research administration teams, and other Office for Research resources.

What We Support

Who Provides Support

Research Development (Office for Research)

Provides strategic, early-stage support for proposal planning and development—particularly for large, complex, or interdisciplinary proposals. This includes guidance on positioning, team development, and overall proposal strategy.

School and Unit Research Administration Teams

Work closely with investigators on proposal preparation, including budgeting, sponsor guidelines, and internal requirements. These teams are often your first point of contact during proposal development.

Additional Office for Research Resources

Specialized support may be available depending on the opportunity, including limited submissions coordination and internal funding programs.

What happens next?

Once your proposal is fully developed, it moves into the formal review and submission process.
