Winter Recess Office Closure

All University offices (including Northwestern Research) will be closed for winter recess from Monday, December 24 through Tuesday, January 1. Units providing essential services will not close, however, it is advised that research considerations be made in advance.

Research Admin Training Set

Registration is now open for the first Research Administration Training Seminar of 2019. The training is a series of four sessions that introduces participants to Northwestern’s research administration process, policies, procedures, and offices.

November 2018

‘No Continuing Review’

In response to changes in 45CFR46, Northwestern’s IRB has adopted a burden-reducing provision that allows for most new non-exempt, minimal-risk, and non-FDA regulated research projects to be approved without an expiration date. The approval on these projects will no longer expire (or “lapse”). Also, when a researcher submits a continuing review for a previously approved project, the IRB Office will determine whether the project meets the criteria for the “No CR” provision.

LRP Applications Due November 15

The application period for the 2019 NIH Extramural Loan Repayment Program is open through November 15. Northwestern applicants must have an Institutional Business Official from Sponsored Research confirm and certify their status before their application can be submitted. If you or a researcher in your unit is interested in applying to the LRP, you are encouraged to submit the required Northwestern LRP Certification Form to Sponsored Research by November 8.

New Uniform Guidance Procurement Standards

New procedures are in place to ensure Northwestern is in compliance with updated Uniform Guidance Procurement Standards for purchases on sponsored programs. Visit the new Uniform Guidance Procurement Standards webpage to learn more.

New Procurement Standards

Northwestern will implement the Uniform Guidance Procurement Standards for purchases on sponsored programs starting September 1, 2018, in accordance with government regulations 2 CFR 200.317-326. The University has created a Uniform Guidance Procurement Guide to assist departments with the transition.

NIH Just-In-Time

To assist investigators and RAs in responding in an appropriate and timely fashion to NIH “just-in-time” (JIT) requests, a new informational page has been added to the Sponsored Research website. This resource discusses what is included in a JIT request as well as related information about IRB and IACUC protocols and submission requirements.

Easier Way to Find Federal Funding

Check out Research Development’s curated lists of federal funding opportunities, conveniently pre-screened for Northwestern eligibility and expertise, and categorized by research area. The curated lists are updated weekly and can be accessed directly in the Pivot database or emailed to you via the Insight newsletter.

Minors at Northwestern Policy

A new policy formalizing protections for minors involved in programming at Northwestern is under community review through Friday, July 20. The Youth on Campus website provides additional guidance on new requirements as well as resources for faculty and staff who manage these programs.

FIRST-DailyLife Funded by NIAMS

The new Fostering Innovative Rheumatic Disease Team-Based Research to Improve Daily Life-Core Center for Clinical Research (FIRST-DailyLife CCCR) is one of five CCCR P30s funded nationally, and seeks to catalyze research that improves the lives of people with or at risk for rheumatic diseases and musculoskeletal conditions.

CLP Core Crawl Set for July 12

The CLP Core Crawl is a two-hour interactive event that encourages researchers to socialize, network, and tour 10 core facilities located in the Richard and Barbara Silverman Hall for Molecular Therapeutics and Diagnostics, located at 2170 Campus Drive on the Evanston campus.

Student Safety Group Opportunities

The Research Safety Student Initiative (RSSI) is launching two programs to provide NMR secondary containers and safety glass dispensers to various labs. Chemistry researchers can also sign up for RSSI lab safety walk-throughs, which will take place in August.

NRSA Stipend Levels Announced

Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award Training Related Expenses and the Institutional Allowance for postdoctoral trainees and fellows have been increased. Applicants should be mindful of these changes when preparing proposals.

The summer training seminar will take place from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on July 16, 18, 23, and 25 on the Chicago campus. Representatives from 20 offices will be presenting.
